What is the prostate?
 
The prostate is part of the male reproductive system. It weighs about 30 grams and is about the size of a walnut. It is located below the bladder, in front of the large intestine. It surrounds the external urethra. The function of the prostate is to contribute to the semen that is carried from the testicles to the urethra during ejaculation.
 
What is an enlarged prostate?
 
Benign prostate enlargement is an enlargement of the prostate gland. In men, prostate enlargement starts to cause problems after the age of 40. The size of the prostate increases with age
 
Does every man have an enlarged prostate?
 
BPH is a common disease in aging men. Half of men aged between 50-60 years have BPH. This rate reaches 90 percent in the 80s.
 
What causes the complaints that occur in benign prostate enlargement?
 
As the prostate enlarges, it compresses the urinary canal and the bladder wall thickens. Over time, the bladder may lose its contractile strength and become unable to empty the bladder completely. The compression of the urinary canal and the inability to pass urine is the cause of most of the problems associated with BPH.
 
Are the symptoms of benign prostate enlargement confused with other diseases?
 
BPH itself is not cancer and does not cause cancer. However, BPH and prostate cancer can occur at the same time. The symptoms caused by BPH and prostate cancer can be similar and it is important to distinguish between the two.
 
What are the symptoms of an enlarged prostate?
 
As the prostate enlarges, it can block or irritate the bladder. The common complaint in BPH is frequent urination.
